UB Higher Education Leadership Summit, March 2017

The Higher Education Leadership Summit, March 8 - 10, 2017, in Dallas, provided participants with opportunities for high-level networking and new thinking in key topics related to campus leadership, including technology solutions that are reshaping the higher education landscape.

Speakers

Ali Houshmand

Dr. Houshmand’s passion has led to great change at Rowan. Over the past six years, Rowan increased enrollment by 7,000 students, invested nearly $350 million in capital projects, added 51 new academic programs, hired nearly 180 tenure-track faculty, opened a medical school (M.D.) and integrated a second (D.O.) and was designated a state research university. Rowan University is a leader in public-private partnerships and in making education more affordable through unique community college partnerships.

Brian Mitchell

Brian Mitchell is president of Brian Mitchell & Associates and chairs the Edvance Foundation. He is the former president of Bucknell University and Washington & Jefferson College. He writes weekly for the Huffington Post and Academe, and contributes to Diverse Issues in Higher Education, University Business, College Planning & Management, Fox News Online, and WGBH (National Public Radio/Boston). His new book on how to run a college (co-authored) will be published by Johns Hopkins University Press in the fall of 2017.

Diana Natalicio

Diana Natalicio has since 1988 been president of UT El Paso, where enrollment has grown from 15,000 to 24,000, the budget from $65 to $450 million, research expenditures from $6 to $90 million, and doctoral programs from 1 to 21. She has served on numerous boards, including the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Science Board, and has been honored with the Carnegie Corporation’s Academic Leadership Award, the TIME 100 list and the Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca from the President of Mexico.

Elena Cox

Elena Maria Cox, MBA. Committed to the idea that everyone has the potential to thrive, Elena founded vibeffect in 2013 after a successful international career in sales, public-private partnerships, crisis management, and transformational leadership. She recruited a team of data and behavioral scientists, educators, and technology experts and challenged the team to figure out how to isolate individualized thriving patterns. They created a model that offers current and future students better, reliable information for achieving and optimizing their goals and their education.

Elliot Levine

Elliott Levine, HP Distinguished Technologist for Education, is a former K-12 school administrator and adjunct professor. Elliott has over 20 years’ experience in edtech at every level. He is a past columnist for the American School Boards Journal, has been interviewed by many leading educational publications and a speaker at national and international conferences. He serves on the advisory board of WNET and on the board of directors for nonprofit education companies and startups.

James Muyskens

James Muyskens is the Summit Chair, University Professor at the City University of New York, and former president of Queens College CUNY (2002-2013). He served as Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for the University System of Georgia (1995-2002) and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas (1988-1995). He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Michigan and is the author of numerous books and articles in ethics and the philosophy of religion.

James Martin

James Martin is professor of English at Mount Ida College, where he earlier served as Chief Academic Officer and Provost. With Dr. James Samels, he has authored numerous books with the Johns Hopkins University Press: Merging Colleges for Mutual Growth (1994), First Among Equals: The Role of the Chief Academic Officer (1997), Presidential Transition in Higher Education (2004), Turnaround: Leading Stressed Colleges and Universities to Excellence (2009), The Sustainable University (2012), and, most recently, Consolidating Colleges and Merging Universities: New Strategies for Higher Education Leaders (2017).

James Samels

Dr. James E. Samels is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of both The Education Alliance and The Samels Group, a full-service higher education consulting firm specializing in academic planning and program development, enrollment management, campus, multi-campus and systemwide change management, strategic alliances, new academic program development, executive leadership search and organizational development, international education, and distance learning.

Ken Michaels

Before taking on the role of Macmillan Learning’s CEO, Ken was responsible for leading global operations for Macmillan Science and Education in his role as Chief Operating Officer. He previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer at Hachette Book Group, spent 12 years in various Executive Management roles for the McGraw-Hill Companies, and also spent 12 years at General Electric. Ken holds a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, an MBA, and is a graduate of GE’s Financial Management Program.

Mike Belcher

Mike Belcher, HP's Americas Education Innovation Officer, has helped universities, colleges and School systems for over 15 years. He has provided guidance to state governments to fund, build and deliver effective, sustainable Instructional technology programs. Before HP, he led the teams that built and managed Gateways Learning Solutions products and services focused on improved learning through the use of technology. Mike’s passion and commitment is building and supporting successful products, services and learning solutions that lead to improved student learning

Risa Palm

Risa Palm has been the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Georgia State University since 2009. Prior, she served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the State University of New York, and held tenured faculty positions at Colorado Boulder, Oregon, UNC Chapel Hill and LSU. Palm holds a B.A. in history, B.S. in social studies education, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in geography. Her research interests include urban geography, housing, and topics of natural hazards response.
